REPORT TO:                         Director of Early Childhood Education

Purpose of Job: Provide teaching services to children.  Oversee classroom’s substitute teachers, interns and volunteers.

The following is illustrative and not inclusive.  The supervisor may assign other job related duties.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement lesson plans that are in conformance with EEC and NAEYC standards.
  2. Set up the classroom environment to stimulate learning.
  3. Carry out on a daily basis developmentally and age appropriate social/educational activities
  4. Meet the individual social/educational needs of children.
  5. Consistently provide children with positive reinforcement.
  6. Consistently set clear, appropriate limits for children.
  7. Speak to children in a quiet, respectful, warm, encouraging voice. (A slightly louder and firmer voice should be the exception that may be used only when safety or stopping inappropriate behavior is an immediate concern.  Yelling and angry outbursts should never occur.)
  8. Maintain appropriate supervision of children at all times, including positioning self to hear and see sleeping children and checking on children who might be out of sight for short periods of time while toileting or in a quiet area.
  9. Make sure classroom conforms to E.E.C. licensing standards, including appropriate staff/child ratios.
  10. Make sure classroom activities conform to NAEYC accreditation standards.
  11. Conduct developmental screening of children, as requested, using the ASQ Screening Tool.
  12. Conduct ongoing assessment of children using the Teaching Strategies Gold assessment tool.
  13. Report to supervisor and D.C.F., as required, all instances of actual and/or alleged child physical, sexual or emotional abuse/neglect.
  14. Check children’s physical health upon arrival.
  15. Share relevant client information with co-teacher, and also with supervisor as needed.
  16. Develop class plans in conjunction with co-teacher.
  17. Refer specific children to the Director of Early Childhood Education and/or Family Service Coordinator for testing, medical and/or psychological evaluation, as warranted.
  18. Submit individual progress reports on each child as required by Program Director.
  19. Inform parents/caretakers of child’s progress as concerns arise and at times required by supervisor.
  20. Make entries on each child’s client record as significant issues arise and periodically as required by supervisor.
  21. Keep attendance logs, medical logs, accident/incident reports, meal sheets and other required documentation.
  22. Maintains an inventory of classroom equipment and supplies and requisitions new materials as needed.
  23. Keep the classroom in order and the equipment in good condition.
  24. Arrange and prepare for field trips after seeking approval from the Director of Early Childhood Education.
  25. Attend staff meetings.
  26. Attend in-service training and other additional training needed to upgrade skills and maintain E.E.C. teacher certification.
  27. Assist in department and agency-wide special projects.
  28. Maintain level of confidentiality outlined in agency personnel policies, except when superseded by contractual requirements, law or court order.

Qualifications:

  • Must be E.E.C. teacher qualified.
  • Prefer candidates that meet N.A.E.Y.C. teacher qualifications and that have a related college degree.
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is desirable.
